Paisley

Originating in Paisley Scotland, designs based on the highly formalised curling leaf motif where the motif is filled with tiny semi-geometric decorative marks, became immensely popular in the late C18th and early C19th and were printed on thousands of shawls. The forms can become very elaborate, there is a whole vocabulary of motifs and sometimes are very engagingly interwoven with naturalistic roses. Many were printed in India and have become characteristic of that nation's print style as it plays to their strengths in decorative printing which uses small area s of bright colour.

Patchwork

A number of disparate patterned pieces put together in one design.

Pics

The number of threads used in weaving. A measure of the strength and density of a woven cloth: the more pics the stronger and better quality of cloth.

Plaid

Traditionally another name for tartan where a check pattern is formed with multiple stripes horizontal and vertical. Wonderful colour effects can be devised at the crossover points.

Palampore

Name given to Indian Tree of life patterns which were used as bed hangings in the C17th. Palampore.

Palmette

A stylised frond or feather shape, derived from the word palm. Palmette.

Plume

Feather used for decoration, usually extravagent or exotic. Plume.
